Skills development

UPHLS has been empowering Youth With Disabilities (YWDs) with both soft and technical skills as part of sharpening the youth’s minds toward self-resilience and sustainable development. Students are taught how to work effectively as individuals or in groups while striving towards understanding and fulfilling the requirements of their chosen qualification. Identifying their own personal values, strengths and areas of challenge or weakness than being able to effectively use or address them, improves their ability to later set goals and personal development plans. These last two projects are one of the methods used for the youth to identify their preferred way of learning, take initiative for learning new skills, and self-monitor of their own progress. From 2014, through the projects “EmployAble” and “HUGUKA DUKORE AKAZI KANOZE (HDAK)”, 1473 vulnerable youth including YWDs from across the country have benefited from skills development. From September 2020 with Umurimo kuri bose, an activity funded by USAID, we provided technical skills and start-up toolkits to 480 youth with disabilities in a period of two year.
